    While ESL is required for those living and working in English speaking cultures such as the UK and USA, it is equally true that English is used as the lingua franca between nations where English is not the primary language. In a globalized world, the number of English learners around the world is only expected to further grow.

  2. Learning to speak English well may be the best thing you can do to improve your life.

    That's right. Do you think it would be fun to have access to information that other people can't get? Talk and write letters to interesting people that others can't communicate with? Impress people around you whenever you opened your mouth? Make big jumps in your career, leaving others miles behind?

    You can get all this if you speak English well.

  5. Call everybody "you". You can say "Do you speak English?" to your friend or to your teacher. In other languages, you have to use the right word for the right person. In English, everybody is equal. :-)
    English is everywhere. You can easily access English-language television, music, websites, magazines, etc. You don't have to learn from boring textbooks. You can learn and use your English at the same time. Using your English is especially important because it increases your desire to learn.

  8. -Most of the movies are in English, so if we know the language, we are no more forced to concentrate on the subtitle but we can watch the images freely.
    -Most of the songs are in English. I think that it is useful to understand the message of each song, not only its rythms.

  10. When you move to a different country or region, learning the local language will help you to communicate and integrate with the local community. Even if many of the locals speak your language, for example if your L1 is English and you move to the Netherlands, it's still worth your while learning the local language. Doing so will demonstrate your interest in and commitment to the new country.

  14. If you are teaching at a school then your students are probably there because it is part of the curriculum. English is one of the many classes that they have to take (of course, they have personal reasons in addition to this).

    The variety of uses that the English language is put to has given rise to ESP, English for Specific Purposes. This is an entirely separate branch of TEFL that covers things such as business English, academic English and the English of specific industries. If you are teaching adult classes, they probably have specific goals in mind already. Obviously a business English class has a clear theme, and even conversational classes are aimed at increasing general language skills in an informal setting.

When you consider that approximately 375 million people in the world speak English as a mother tongue, an equally large number of people speak English as a second language, and around 750 million people speak English as a foreign language, English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. In addition over one billion people currently learn English. In fact, it is estimated that one in four people studying English as a foreign language and you could be one of them.
